@Exarian What I meant was a capture card with hdmi in. Apparently though they do make ones with component in. IDK though, I guess I should just get an easy cap for 10 bucks and use win7 pro. Watching the content I record with media center...

so, would you recommend using myth tv with a connection to the internet and over the air HDTV as a viable alternative to normal cable and satellite? (with things like netflix and hulu to fill in all the other gaps.)

can someone help me with this. I dont understand, so if i use mythbuntu (im technicaly inclined wont have a problem installing) and i plug the pc its running on into my tv, it acts as a dvr. for my already present verizon fios tv?

@ampcguy Thanks for the info, but as for the TV tuner part of my comment I've never seen one with component and I know for a fact that an HDMI TV tuner isn't and will never be possible.

MythTV is an application, it run on an OS like Ubuntu. Mythbuntu is just an install of Ubuntu with MythTV already built in. Because of the different hardware, software, and codec's MythTV has to work with it can be a challenge to set up from scratch. With MythBuntu a lot of common problems are already taken care of for you. There are plenty of high def capture cards both over the air and those that take component cables as input.

I never really understood myth TV because to my understanding it's not a stand alone OS, but instead requires an OS like Linux mint or Ubuntu and then theirs Mythbuntu. So confusing...... And another thing why doesn't anyone make any hi-def capture cards!!!!!!

yes, you can minimize it and use the desktop with no problems. or theres a browser you can pull up in the muth frontend itself

boxee is awesome, for the 4 minutes that it doesnt crash. really a proper pos comared to myth tv

I second this. XBMC is pretty good as well. Both aren't quite as stable as mythbuntu, but will be soon.

Windows MC isn't horrible, but you have to have a super good system to use it. Ubuntu enables people to use economy computers and run a media center/network just as good. I would never say Ubuntu "copied" someone else, that's a little juvenile. I would say they made a good idea more accessible and efficient. But hey if something works for you, then it works for you.

...Actually wasn't MythTV created first? ...and yeah I know MythTV isn't Ubuntu's. I think Microsoft picked up the "MythTV" idea.

Check out "Boxee", it's a new media center package for Linux distro's, Ubuntu, etc, and it is fantastic, it is also classed as a "Web 2.0" media center as it sincs with your youtube account, etc.

If you like the Microsoft stuff stick with it. I, however have switched over to free, open source, Linux installations at home and no longer need or use Microsoft's overpriced and shoddy software. Been running Ubuntu for nearly a year without a hitch - no freezing, blue screening, errors, etc. Can you say that about Vista? Kudos to the Mythbuntu project!
